the tools

I used the following to build this site:

Tony N's Webpage was my main HTML editor, although I did do some of the more word-processing-like tasks with HTML-kit.
Images were created using paint.NET.
As usual firefox, firebug, the developer's toolbar and total validator were with me on the journey.

All free of course.

the XHTML

Yes it’s XHTML strict, but that’s only because I find it difficult to code basic HTML. The CSS is valid and contains no IE hacks—not even a conditional stylesheet. I’ve also tried to use the ‘correct’ HTML elements and as few ids and classes as possible.

the type

I’ve used the following font-stacks:

For body text: Palatino, Palatino Linotype, Georgia, Times, Times New Roman, serif
For headings: Lucida Sans, Lucida Grande, Lucida Sans Unicode, sans-serif
For code etc: Courier New, Courier, monospace

Although I’ve ensured that the site does work in a variety of browsers there’s no doubt that it works best in firefox. I make no apology for this.

I use feehostia, partly because they are free but they also provide an excellent service. I can heartily recommend them.
